This article, published in the December 2005 (latest issue) of Plant Species Biology, reports findings on the effect of nectar spur length in the moth pollination of Platanthera lacera (type of flowering plant).  Through removal of at least one pollinium, visitation rates were studied.  598 spurs from 44 different plants with different nectar spur lengths were studied.  It was concluded that nectar spur length was not directly related to visitation rates of the pollination syndrome and thus, that the number of polliniums did not effect the likelihood of the moth to visit.

scoliopus bigelovii:    liliopsida = monocotyldeon.   Contains one seed leaf.        Type of wildflower and has complete flowers.  Leaves are shade leaves.  Type of perennial plant.  One to Four leafless flowering stems.

Flowers: dark purple color with green and white.  Erect and extremely fragarent (rotting smell).  All genes (A,B,C) intact.  Plant type= bulb.  Has n=8 chromosomes.  Fruit is 15-18mm eliptic.  Pollination Syndrome is carrion beetles due to color and rotting smell.
